About Benefits Data Lab

Benefits Data Lab enables all self-insured employers to utilize strategies developed by very large ("jumbo") employers to dramatically reduce employee health expenses. The key is using data to actively manage employee health benefits. Greg Alonzo, co-founder of Benefits Data Lab, helped develop many of these techniques, and Benefits Data Lab makes these available to all self-insured employers.

We work closely with health benefits brokers to bring these services to market. Brokers are a key business partner for BDL: they have an intimate understanding of each employer’s needs, they can see and understand how data can be used to reduce health benefits cost, and they can bring this message to the employer, opening the door for BDL.

Leadership

Benefits Data Lab’s leaders bring significant experience in healthcare and consulting, and have first-hand experience successfully developing innovative benefits programs that reduce cost, improve benefits and lead to healthier employees and families.

Greg sets the strategic vision and direction for Benefits Data Labs, and leads BDL’s efforts to achieve that vision. He has over twenty years of experience consulting in healthcare, and has insight into innovative health benefits solutions for middle-market employers.

Greg has first-hand experience with every part of the healthcare sector, including physician groups, health systems, pharmaceutical companies, carriers/TPAs, PBMs and point-solution vendors. He also has extensive experience both leading and executing healthcare data and analytics initiatives. Prior to founding Benefits Data Lab he was part of the team that designed and implemented an innovative set of data-driven, active health benefits management programs for the Health Transformation Alliance (HTA). These data-driven programs are currently being implemented with HTA members, and inspired the founding of BDL in order to bring those techniques to all employers offering self-funded health plans (www.htahealth.com).

Prior to working with the HTA, Greg led the Healthcare Data Analytics practice for Arthur J Gallagher, the third largest employee benefits consultant in the US, where he developed innovative analytics and reporting for hundreds of companies. He has been part of a number of firsts in the industry as well, including being the first known large-scale migration of data from a health plan’s mainframe servers onto a PC for analysis.

Greg holds and MBA from Harvard University, and graduated magna cum laude with a double major in Engineering and the Mathematics And Social Sciences Honors Program at Dartmouth College.
